Supporting Change
What is Veterinary Behaviour?
Think of veterinary behaviour as a psychiatry equivalent in the veterinary world. Behavioural problems such as barking, destruction and aggression can all be signs of underlying mental health disease. Even the most experienced trainers can have difficulties seeing significant improvement in these cases as the brain is not functioning normally. In veterinary behaviour we investigate possible causes of ill mental health by looking at the whole animal and the environment around it.
We work together with your regular veterinarian and trainer to formulate a plan to help encourage change towards a healthier, happier animal.
In veterinary behaviour, a history and observation of the animal are our ‘diagnostic tests’. Prior to the consultation we will ask for a questionnaire to be completed and for any relevant videos to be sent. This allows us to have a strong foundation to establish a clear history during consultation. There will be lots of discussion about every aspect of your pets life before moving on to determine a diagnosis and then lastly a management plan.
Some consultations result in prescription of medication for your pet if it is deemed appropriate. In addition, we will discuss any alterations to the home environment that may help manage and support your pet. Lastly we will develop a behaviour modification plan to help teach your pet new skills in relaxation and management of stressors.
Behaviour and mental health are chronic conditions that require time and individualised plans to help create change. Regular check ups are essential to ensuring your pet is on the right track and to help support you as their carer.
